Braces Treatment

Description

Orthodontic treatment—also known as braces treatment—is applied to correct jaw and oral structural anomalies. The goal is to align teeth and the jaw into a harmonious, functional state. The treatment is performed by an orthodontist. Many people undergo this treatment for a better smile and a healthy jaw structure.

This process, done to achieve an aesthetic and healthy appearance of the teeth and jaw, typically takes around 1.5 to 2 years. Generally, alignment issues stem from the jaw structure. That’s why this treatment is administered by a specialist orthodontist.

What Is the Purpose of Orthodontic Treatment?

It promotes healthier gums and aids in the digestion process. It allows easier chewing with less effort. It increases self-confidence by helping you like your smile more. It helps you smile more freely once your insecurity about your teeth is resolved.

It prevents teeth from breaking or shifting. It improves speech by eliminating problems caused by jaw or teeth misalignment. It ensures the proper distribution of bite force. It significantly reduces the risk of cavities and plaque buildup. It also improves the shape of the mouth, face, and lips.

How Is Orthodontic Treatment Performed?

Braces treatment works by applying continuous, controlled force to move the teeth in a certain direction using wires and brackets. Achieving the desired tooth position requires only consistent and gentle pressure.

Brackets are the small attachments bonded to the teeth, through which the wires pass. Since they are fixed to the teeth, they help apply consistent pressure, guiding the teeth to their correct positions.

In certain cases, patients may be asked to use elastic bands to help move the teeth into the correct position. These elastics are easy to attach and remove. Brackets can be made of metal, ceramic, or glass and are offered as options to patients.

When Should Orthodontic Treatment Begin?

According to the International Orthodontic Association, children over the age of 7 should have an orthodontic check-up. This allows early detection of jaw anomalies. The ideal age for starting braces is between 12–13 years old; however, adults can also receive orthodontic treatment. For adults, the process may take longer.

Important Considerations During Treatment

Wearing braces can be a challenging process, especially regarding food and oral hygiene. Eating may be difficult during the first few weeks, which is normal while adjusting.

Food particles can get stuck between and inside the brackets, so using a special orthodontic toothbrush or a soft-bristled toothbrush is important. In short, you need to double your usual oral care efforts. Some foods should be avoided—such as acidic, hard, and sticky foods.

During orthodontic treatment, another crucial point is wearing a mouthguard during sports to protect the teeth and braces.
