Gum Swelling

Description

Gum swelling is a condition many people suffer from, causing pain and sensitivity for days. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications. Poor oral and gum health affects our entire body and significantly reduces our quality of life.

Studies by experts have shown that bacteria causing gum swelling can enter the bloodstream and negatively affect the heart, lungs, and other parts of the body. Untreated gum diseases can reach underlying tissues and bones, causing more severe issues.

Why Do Gums Swell

Gum swelling is often observed in individuals who neglect oral hygiene. Food particles between teeth can turn into bacteria if not brushed regularly, leading to gum diseases. There are many causes of gum swelling. Some of them include:

  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the gums, causing them to swell. Pregnancy can lead to gum enlargement, increased vascularization, and changes in tissue structure.
  • Dry mouth: Insufficient saliva production can allow bacteria to multiply more easily in the mouth. This can result in swelling and inflammation in the gums.
  • Vitamin deficiencies: Inadequate intake of vitamins can impair gum structure and cause pain, swelling, and bleeding. Especially important vitamins for oral health are B12, folic acid, and vitamin C.
  • Cancer: In some leukemia and lymphoma cases, tumor-like formations in the gums can cause swelling.
  • Medications: Certain medications for epilepsy, heart rhythm, and blood pressure can cause gum swelling.
  • Dentures and prosthetics: Improper use, cleaning, or ill-fitting oral appliances can cause swelling in the gums.

Types of Gum Swelling

Gum swelling can occur in many different forms. A proper diagnosis by a specialist is crucial for your health and treatment process. If not correctly diagnosed, the swelling may worsen over time.

  • Wisdom tooth gum swelling: Swelling can occur as wisdom teeth erupt. If oral hygiene is not sufficient, infection may develop. Infections can negatively affect the jaw, cheeks, and neck. In such cases, you should see a dentist without delay.
  • Palatal swelling: Swelling in the palate is a common issue. It can be caused by food or hot beverages but may also signal serious diseases. Causes include palatal abscesses and malfunctioning salivary glands.
  • Gum swelling with braces: Swelling may occur after getting braces, as the gums may react to the foreign object. If the swelling persists, consult your dentist.
  • Gum swelling in babies and children: Typically caused by teething, gum swelling in children is common and not usually a cause for concern. The gums may appear pale and sensitive during teething.

How to Relieve Gum Swelling

Gum swelling can be relieved and prevented by taking a few measures at home. These precautions are vital for maintaining gum health. Don’t delay implementing them. For healthy gums:

  • Brush teeth twice a day for 2 minutes with a toothbrush of suitable hardness.
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush while brushing.
  • Brush gently without damaging the gums.
  • Use dental floss.
  • Rinse with saltwater.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

These practices will be beneficial.

Treatment for Gum Swelling

Treatment for gum swelling begins with identifying the underlying cause. Your dentist will ask when the swelling started and how often it recurs. Questions may include whether you’re pregnant and your dietary habits. After this, a decision will be made based on x-rays and physical examination.

To relieve gum swelling, your dentist may recommend mouthwash or antibiotics to prevent gum inflammation or reduce plaque. Cleaning unhealthy gum tissue, tartar, and plaque from tooth roots may be necessary. In cases of severe swelling and infection, surgery may be required.
